Local artist Eric Klein Velderman and the students of Oldbury College were given a brief to develop a public artwork for the main college entrance which made reference to local history and had the theme of a "tree".
Student workshops began back in December 2011, but it wasn't until the end of January 2013 that the finished sculpture was delivered to site. (delayed slightly due to inclement weather)
The unique sculpture resembles a sporting trophy with its 3 huge trunks transforming into different multi-layer leaf shape designs that extend to a height well in excess of 5 metres. The base plinth includes a spherical water feature and LED lighting for extra drama. The sculpture is fabricated entirely from stainless steel and has a superb glass bead blasted finish.
The college provided a quotation that is polished into the plinth which reads:
"The quality of life is dictated by the strength of our education. By opening the door to knowledge we open the door to life and by learning together today we shall lead tomorrow"
It was a great project to be involved with, and a fantastic piece of art. Well done everyone.
